This “unique beach-side restaurant with iconic views across Oxwich to Three Cliffs Bay” has become established as a major culinary destination, and one that provides a reason for foodies to trek to the distant Gower Peninsula. There is a three-course option at lunch, but in the evenings chef Hywell Griffith and his team offer either a six-course or eight-course menu for £110 and £125 per person respectively. Fans (most diners) say “the whole dining experience is exquisite, with staff who are friendly, courteous and very well trained and truly enchanting food – locally sourced with combinations that are fresh, subtle and delicious”. Ratings this year, though, came under pressure from a minority who found it either pricey or patchy in its delivery.

The “amazing cooking”, including “fabulous seafood”, at chef Hywell Griffith’s former coalhouse in a “fantastic beach setting” is “worth the trek to the Gower Peninsula whatever the weather”. “Sitting looking out over a wide expanse of beach”, “sipping an unusual cocktail”, “you could be in the Med”. You can push the boat out for six-course or eight-course tasting menus here, but the entry level is a three-course menu for £89 per person.

“What a gorgeous place” – chef Hywell Griffith showcases his “just right, rather than over-processed” cuisine in a rugged ex-coalhouse with a “spectacular seafront setting”“literally on the beach, with fabulous views over Oxwich Bay on the Gower Peninsula”. Even when it’s not sunny, “the cosy atmosphere looking out to grey skies and moody seas is almost as spectacular”. While most of the ingredients are local, “it’s not all fish by any means – but the fish dishes are exceptional”.

“A more stunning setting would be hard to find” – a vaulted dining room overlooking the sandy stretch of Oxwich Bay with “views that will take your breath away” – and chef Hywell Griffith's à la carte and tasting menus are “worthy of their Michelin star” (as of 2019), “with wonderful local produce and exceptional local seafood” a feature.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
