“Outstanding” former coaching inn with a “great atmosphere” and versatile appeal – whether for a “cosy romantic evening around the log fire; at a beautiful table for two upstairs in the window”; for a “family get-together”; or for “a business meeting in one of the private dining rooms”. Built in the 1400s, it was relaunched by the owners in 2008, with a “tastefully decorated dining room”, a “fantastic walled garden”, and “food of an exceptionally high standard”, all with “great set-price menus available”.

With its pretty garden and handsomely fitted-out interior, this period gastropub has been no stranger to national awards lists since launching in 2008. It is rated consistently well in reports and even a sceptic whose commentary found it “perhaps a little overpriced” still rated it soundly across the board.

Marcus Bennett’s fifteenth-century village gastroboozer – a regular on ‘best’ UK gastropubs lists, and a consistent scorer in our annual diners’ poll – is a “very dependable” sort of spot, offering “beautifully presented food, especially game in season”; there was the odd quibble this year (“are prices higher” now?) but it still makes for “a good all-round treat now and again”.

One of the most commented-on pubs in the North of England – few are as consistently highly rated this year as chef-patron Marcus Bennett’s “excellent gastropub”, which he has run since 2008. The cooking is “very enjoyable, especially in the game season – for example, partridge beautifully presented”.

For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
