Marcus Bennett’s fifteenth-century village gastroboozer – a regular on ‘best’ UK gastropubs lists, and a consistent scorer in our annual diners’ poll – is a “very dependable” sort of spot, offering “beautifully presented food, especially game in season”; there was the odd quibble this year (“are prices higher” now?) but it still makes for “a good all-round treat now and again”.

One of the most commented-on pubs in the North of England – few are as consistently highly rated this year as chef-patron Marcus Bennett’s “excellent gastropub”, which he has run since 2008. The cooking is “very enjoyable, especially in the game season – for example, partridge beautifully presented”.

WIth its “very good, sophisticated and well presented” food, chef-patron Marcus Bennett's award-winning fifteenth-century coaching inn remains a top local draw since opening in 2008, and is now part of the local Teesside mini-empire he runs with Jonathan Hall. While it’s on “the same level as some upmarket restaurants in London, unfortunately also the same prices” apply!

Chef-patron Marcus Bennett’s “excellent cooking” has earned solid ratings for this fifteenth-century coaching inn over the past dozen years. Bennett and his business partner, fellow-local Jonathan Hall, now own three other venues on Teesside, the Devonport Hotel and Yarm’s Cena and Muse Café.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
