Harden's says
Richard and Lindsey Johns, the powerhouse team of two behind Rascills in Raskelf (RIP), have bought this village inn (formerly known as The Malt Shovel); they opened the pub and restaurant on 31 July 2019, with guest rooms following within a year. "Modern British classics" with Sunday roasts will be on the menu.

The Hovingham Inn Restaurant Diner Reviews

"Notwithstanding our remote location in rural Wensleydale, relocating from London last year, we thought ourselves fortunate for many reasons easily imagined, not least to be within reach of several dining establishments of quality, ranging from “good” to “almost great”. One such early discovery was Rascill’s, an intimate restaurant in the out-of-the-way village of Raskelf, run by Richard and Lindsey Johns whose passion for cooking and service left an indelible impression when we first lunched there on Christmas Day 2018. Although Rascill’s, sadly, didn’t survive long thereafter, Richard and Lindsey certainly have, reinventing themselves in Hovingham at the eponymous Inn, their innovation and passion seemingly undiminished. Of course, the scourge of COVID-19 has, at least for the time being, put an end to the simple pleasure of dining out, along with almost all conviviality. Nevertheless, undeterred, imaginative and resourceful restaurateurs are adapting themselves to the provision of takeaway meals. Should such a description recollect one’s prior experience of indifferent fast food, this novel expression of “takeaway” is quite other, at its best, transporting restaurant table into home, with all the creation, and most of the hard graft, realised at source. And so with The Hovingham Inn: Sunday Lunch and Friday Fish Pie have featured on their menu recently; for both, we’ve driven the short distance to Hovingham, to Lindsey’s warm greeting and in anticipation of Richard’s thoroughly enjoyable food – great comfort in these testing times."

"This was my wife and myself' s first visit to the Hovingham's for Sunday lunch, it most certainly wont be the last, If there is a better Sunday lunch in East/ North Yorkshire we are yet to find it, Great venue, Courteous and efficient staff, Great Food and Cask ales. Good value wine section. The Roast Pork and the Beef were cooked to perfection, Vegetables as we like them, My wife had the freshly made Scotch eggs for a starter and I had the white onion and cider soup with freshly home made Focaccia bread, were superb. Looking at their midweek menu it cant be long until this place and the owners get the recognition they deserve. We stayed over in a Hotel 100 yards down the road and will do the same again to fully enjoy the restaurants fine food and drinks. Cant Wait to visit again We can highly recommend this venue. Gary & Julie. Date of visit: August 2020"
