Summary
Reopened in late 2022 after being gutted by a disastrous fire that swept through its ancient thatch a year earlier, this 14th-century inn is, for many people, “one of my favourite places to eat in the UK” – “the staff ooze Northern charm and make you feel very welcome”, while “patron Andrew Pern and his incredible team, including head chef Steve Smith and restaurant manager Eve Cullen, ensure a wonderful experience every time”. “Love how they offer ‘Michelin’ cuisine but also a locals’ menu which is accessible to a wider audience” – “love it so much, we got married there!”. Top Tip – “the black pudding and foie gras is a best-ever dish”.
Summary
Fire swept through the four-foot-thick thatch of this “iconic” fourteenth-century North Yorkshire inn one night in late November 2021, reducing the structure ‘to ashes’, in the words of chef-patron Andrew Pern the next morning – although he hoped to be ‘up and running’ again within a year, while staff would be deployed to his Star spinoffs in York and Whitby. Police investigating the fire quickly concluded that it had been set deliberately. Four months earlier, Andrew had celebrated his 25th anniversary at the Star: “iconic in Yorkshire, and well worth a detour when visiting the Dales” thanks to its “stunning” cooking from his (and head chef, Stephen Smith’s) extensive tasting menu or à la carte selection.
Summary
Andrew Pern’s growing foodie empire started off at this “beautiful”, “charming and comfortable”, thatched 14th-century inn over two decades ago, and he has successfully maintained its reputation for “wonderful food, with superb flavours”. One or two fans tip the “brilliant à la carte” over a tasting menu that can seem “a bit out-there” to more conservative tastes, or “prefer the light and airy modern dining room to the old pub-style one”. And on the downside, there remains a minority view that it is “overpriced and living off its kudos”.

For 32 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
