This 18th-century coach house overlooking the green has a particularly “nice setting”, with a walled garden full of herbs used to flavour the in-house gin; the food, which has a strong sustainable slant (plenty of fish and steak) is not reinventing the wheel, but is “always reliable for a sound decent meal” that’s also “reasonably priced”. There are now seven branches in the chain – with the most recent, opened on the former Côte site in Highgate in August 2024, representing the brand’s first return to London in two decades (the venture having started out on Portobello Road back in 2002).

“One of a small chain of reasonably priced eateries in Hertfordshire specialising in sustainability and quality ingredients”, born off the Portobello Road in 2002; even if it’s not hitting its original heights, by all accounts “you’re on safe ground” at the eighteenth-century converted coach house (fish is particularly rated) and fans just “love the outside courtyard space” too.

“Very good all round at this price” and now “back on form after an inconsistent couple of years”, Andrei Lussmann’s converted eighteenth-century coach house is “a reliable choice for a decent meal out in an otherwise unexceptional culinary town”. It is part of a five-strong Herts-based group (Berkhamsted the most recently opened) with a strong emphasis on sustainable fish.

“A real pleasure to visit when in Harpenden” – this eighteenth-century former coach house “maintains consistently high standards” and the brasserie fare “is excellent for this price bracket” (especially the fish, approved by the Marine Stewardship Council). Stop Press – in December 2021, owner Andrei Lussmann was due to add a fifth branch, Lussmanns Sustainable Fish & Grill restaurant, to his Herts group, on the site of the old Bills in Berkhamsted.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
