“A go-to destination in Rutland”“always deservedly very busy and utterly recommended for its delicious and different dishes (especially fish and seafood)”, this “part pub but mostly restaurant” has won widespread recognition over the past 16 years under ex-Bibendum chef Carol and her waiter husband Scott Craddock. Top Menu Tip – “escargots in garlic butter as a homage to the past!”.

This “classy neighbourhood pub/restaurant” is a “perennial favourite for quality food, welcome, service and all-round atmosphere – long may it flourish”, chorus the many admirers of chef Carol & husband Scott Craddock’s Grade II-listed stone pub, where “you dine on the freshest of fish and seafood, their own herbs, wild garlic and good-quality locally raised meat”. Top Tip – “full marks for the home-baked breads and fancy butters (wild or black garlic are favourites)”.

“The Wheatsheaf is almost a Rutland institution now”, after 15 years under Carol & Scott Craddock. The Grade II-listed village pub is “a byword for quality cooking”“the smell of freshly baked bread and the buzz of happy, smiling customers tells you that this is a fine local restaurant”. “Lockdown provided an opportunity for some interior redecoration and tasteful additions, resulting in an interior almost as fine as the welcome”.

This “great local gastropub” in a “lovely village” is enjoying “a new variety of dishes since reopening… we now get oysters!”. The Craddocks have built a loyal following since taking over the Grade II-listed pub in 2008 having moved on from careers in London, where Carol cooked at Bibendum under Simon Hopkinson and Scott won ‘Waiter of the Year’ while working at the Dorchester.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
