“Pure comfort but elevated to new levels” – John Stamp has created a “perfect world of mash potato, gravy and delicious protein options” at his popular Old Town operation, where the mash comes in nine flavours (Scottish dairy butter to Stornoway black pudding), haggis is made in-house, and there’s a mushroom farm in the dank cellar. “I’d put it top of my cheap ’n’ cheerful list, because it sparks joy and is well priced”. A spin-off in London’s Covent Garden closed down after less than two years in 2023.

For 35 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
