Upscale Georgian gastroboozer, handy for J1 of the M40, whose “very pleasant surroundings” (in a ridiculously picture-postcard village), superior ambience and “nice garden” add considerably to its charms. The food, which is divided into small and big plates of comfort food-style British fare, isn’t wildly ambitious but is “consistently good”.

Head to this atmospheric and tastefully renovated Georgian gastropub, just off J1 of the M40, in the cutest of cute Home Counties villages (complete with small outside terrace garden in summer). The straightforward food is not aiming to ‘push the envelope’ but it’s dependably well-realised. Top Tip – grab any parking space you can find: finding a spot a nightmare.
