The flagship of a “small chain with great food”, founded in 2010 by Mitch Tonks – “it’s difficult to know whether it’s a restaurant or an upmarket fish ’n’ chips place (although the food is still good either way)”. The brand now comprises eight restaurants, three takeaways and one café dotted around the southwest, along with a fishmonger and a tinned fish business – but plans to expand via three new branches in 2024 were scuppered by delays: Salcombe and Sidmouth venues should open in summer ’25, but Topsham has been abandoned.

The original and “still the best of the Rockfish chain”, founded by Mitch Tonks in 2010 and now with 10 satellite venues around the southwest coast, as well as its own boat and supply chain in Brixham. It’s an “upmarket fish ’n’ chip restaurant” with prices to match – and the “daily choice is always worth having”.

“A menu with a huge range of fish might suggest a serious fish place” but the original Rockfish (opened in 2010) overlooking the River Dart “feels more like a fish ’n’ chip restaurant with less-than-smart tables, chips with everything and the usual few leaves for salad. People seem mostly to eat the fried food. That said, you could have whitebait, a huge crab at a huge price and juicy gurnard not fried. Service is fast and cheerful”.

“Still the best branch” – overlooking the River Dart, the original Rockfish (est. 2010) offers delicious fish and seafood (plus unlimited chips) and the “daily catch is always worth having”. You'll find their nearby takeaway on Lower Street.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
