“A gastropub favourite” – this 250-year-old inn, part of the regional Seafood Pub Company group, is “a top choice for fish in north Lancashire/southeast Cumbria”, “even if you just want fish ’n’ chips superbly cooked and presented”. “The meat is not bad too”, while its “excellent rooms” make it a perfect stop en route to the Lake District.

“Convenient for exit 34 of the M6”, this 250-year-old inn has “become a firm favourite” under Lancashire’s Seafood Pub Company, who took over the then-ailing site in 2013; the “top-class cooking” centres on “special fish dishes” (plus steaks) and “there are now well-appointed, comfy rooms” too, chased by a breakfast “worth getting up for”.

“The Lune Valley now has some excellent gastropubs,” but this link in the Seafood Pub Company chain is a real “favourite” for numerous reporters thanks to its “splendid, good-value” fish. While the site, “hard up against the A road”, has “long struggled” (under the old regime it “appeared on one of Big Sweary’s failing restaurant TV programmes”) even sceptics now find it a “useful” spot – “close enough to junction 34 of the M6 to be an attractive stopover”.

For 30 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
