Joe & Ben Wright shuttered their long-running bistro Joseph Benjamin close to the city walls in September 2021 to absorb it into their newer wine & tapas bar, Porta, next door. The bistro was well-loved and earned rave reviews in its 15 years, but the brothers clearly felt there was more potential in aligning their business under the Porta brand, which has spawned spinoffs in Altrincham and Salford.

Joe & Ben Wright’s produce-led deli-restaurant is a “real find”, close to the city walls, with every dish “tasty and well presented” (and a particularly “excellent value fixed-price lunch”); “attentive and charming service” to boot.

For 31 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
