“Jonas, the owner is friendly, entertaining and clearly knows his way around a kitchen” at this “relative newcomer” (a late-2019 arrival), which aims for a style of ‘informal fine-dining’. All reports acclaim the “delightful, well-balanced and delicious” cooking – “the menu was short but everything looked interesting and all of the courses were excellent”. “It’s relaxed with friendly staff, and chef comes to your table to explain how he forages for some of the ingredients”.

For 31 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

The chef

Cheshire born Jonas Lodge started his cooking career in Oxford working under Raymond Blanc. A move to Madrid saw him working for Sergio Arola when Spain was leading the way in exciting modern cuisine. 

Relocating back to England after two years in Spain, Jonas went on to work for Heston Blumental. In this position he learnt to question everything & began to understand the why's & how's behind many modern techniques.

His next role saw him move to Manchester where he became sous chef to Paul Heathcote. In this role he developed his management skills & learnt some more traditional cooking techniques. Paul also gave Jonas his first head chefs job, heading up London Road, Alderney Edge.

Jonas's time as head chef at the Bell at Ramsbury had him consistently keeping the food to a 2AA rosette standard. During his time at the Bell they were also awarded AA pub of the year. It was at the bell where Jonas had access to a huge kitchen garden he began experimenting & learning fermentation & other preserving techniques.

GL50 is the culmination of all his experience & a chance for him to develop his own style. Jonas's goal always being to give the guest an experience like no where else. GL50 has a relaxed approach to fine dining but does not compromise on serving exceptional, locally sourced, seasonal produce.
