Harden's says
Opening autumn 2024 in the former Vinoteca premises in Chamberlain Square, a trattoria from the Paris-based Big Mama group – their first in the UK outside London. Expect gaudy, Insta-friendly interiors (vintage bottles, tapestry curtains, and Murano glass chandeliers) and a tongue-in-cheek, over-the-top take on Italian hospitality. The 150-cover space will offer a typically over-indulgent menu, including fresh pastas, Neapolitan pizzas, and desserts (with dishes such as Il Gran Carbonara, Mafaldine al Tartufo, and Pici al Ragu di Agnello). Calorie counters should probably avoid the ‘iconic’ 6-inch tall lemon meringue pie and giant profiterole.
Harden's survey result
Summary
Brum has been ‘Big Mama’d’ with the autumn 2024 opening of this large, 150-cover unit in Chamberlain Square – their first operation outside the capital. Maybe in a big, double-height modern unit, the slapped on glam of hanging foliage, huge curtains, fake oil paintaings, and back-lit bottles feels less tongue-in-cheek pastiche and more, well, theme. For whatever reason, its mix of pizza, pasta, and retro Italian dishes – some in XXL sizing such as its massive Pecorino DOP wheel – has yet to inspire feedback from our Brum reporter-base.

For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
