Harden's survey result
“A long way from anywhere but worth the drive”, say fans of this “lovely spot beside the River Severn”, who hail its “reliably good cooking of high-end fish”. Its ratings were dragged down this year, though, by a couple of mediocre reports: “after several visits I’m baffled by the sky-high score: the food is pleasant enough but not exceptional”.
“The best seafood” can be enjoyed in the dining room – or better still, on the “delightful terrace” – at this venue with “fabulous views” across the Severn. In centuries past it was the site of a ford across the river.
A “great location overlooking the Severn” (“seemingly in the middle of nowhere, with fabulous views”) is matched by “superb” and “elegantly plated” fish dishes at this “modern, bright and light” (but slightly “noisy”) dining room. It’s “best experienced in the summer”, when the “terrace is a great delight”.
Overlooking the River Severn, this “attractive” restaurant-with-rooms “takes some beating” owing to its “delightful staff”, and food with a real “density of flavour” (including fish and shellfish which are “top class”); according to one of its fans, it’s “always excellent”, but “particularly so” of late.
The Old Passage, for centuries the site of the ford across the River Severn, is now better known for our seafood restaurant with rooms. Set at the end of a pennisula on a great ox-bow bend, we overlook the River and on it's far bank, the small town of Newnham-on-Severn with the hills of the ancient Forest of Dean and the iconic May Hill offering a dramatic backdrop.
Old Passage Fish
We are predominantly a seafood restaurant and many years ago much of our fish would have come from the Severn. Salmon and elvers are now sadly in short supply and rarely feature on our menu.
However, Mark Redwood, our chef takes pride in using sustainably sourced fish and shell fish. There is always lobster fresh from our own tanks coming predominantly from Cornwall. Freshly shucked oysters and our famous Fruits de Mers are particular specialities of the Old Passage.
Our starters and main courses vary with the availability of fresh fish and may change daily. If you have your heart set on something specific then please telephone us and we will do our best to supply. If you have dietary or allergy issues, then please let us know, preferably giving us a few days notice.
Please remember that dishes are subject to the daily availability of our fish and shell fish and may well vary subject to weather and other factors.

The Old Passage Inn Restaurant Diner Reviews
"After several visits I'm baffled by the high ratings. The food is fine but expensive, and the room draughty and banal. Service is no better than competent. Location is nice enough, but even so ..."
"A lovely spot beside the river Severn. Excellent tasting menu with fresh oysters and fine fish. On the a la carte menu is a starter of fried mixed sea food and sauces which is really good and excellent value for money - a meal in itself."
"Excellent fresh seafood. They have their own saltwater tanks to keep shellfish fresh. The mixed seafood starter is excellent. The main of fresh lobster hard to beat."
