Featured Wiltshire Restaurants
1. Red Lion Freehouse British, Modern restaurant in East Chisenbury
“Almost the perfect village pub, but to a foodie, far more…” – this acclaimed free house, not far from Stonhenge, offers “an eclectic mix of highly skilled and imaginative cooking, plus friendly individual service in an atmosphere that veers from cosy inn to new annexe in feel, depending on your table”.
2. Three Tuns Freehouse British, Modern restaurant in Great Bedwyn High St - SN8
“A super pub and family destination, with good food” – James Wilsey’s sizeable operation, with beer garden, has a beautiful rural location and is consistently well-rated.
3. Restaurant Hywel Jones by Lucknam Park British, Modern restaurant in Colerne
Stunning Palladian mansion, whose sweeping tree-lined driveway and ornate regalia is tailor-made for a special occasion, complete with “lovely view and garden” and impressive, formal dining room. Longtime chef Hywel Jones continues to produce “superb” cuisine here: “the seven-course tasting menu is a must”, say fans, but there’s also a three-course à la carte (for £87).
4. Les Mirabelles French restaurant in Nomansland Forest Edge Rd - SP5
A “little corner of France in the New Forest” – Claude Laage’s “all-time favourite” is known for its “true Gallic charm, fab food, wine and ambience”. “Such terrific value”, too.
5. Bybrook Restaurant, Manor House Hotel British, Modern restaurant in Castle Combe
Rob Potter’s “excellent” modern British cuisine is sampled either from a six-course tasting menu (£95) or a three-course à la carte (£75) with a small selection of dishes for each course at this plush five-star hotel in the Cotswolds. Perhaps unsurprisingly, there’s the odd gripe about “London prices” but most reports here remain hymns of praise.
6. The Palm Indian restaurant in Froxfield Bath Rd - SN8
It might not look like much from the road – an out-of-town bathroom showroom might be on the mark – and the location on the A4 doesn’t help, but brave the underwhelming façade of this outfit and you’ll find a “swanky” restaurant turning out “inventive Indian cuisine”.
7. The Dining Room, Whatley Manor British, Modern restaurant in Easton Grey
Niall Keating put this Cotswold manor house (which, the history books tell us, was originally named ‘Twatley Manor’) ever-more firmly on the culinary map in October 2019, when it became one of 23 restaurants in the country with two Michelin Stars. All survey feedback on his eclectically inspired twelve-course tasting menu rates it between “very good” and “outstanding”, and this beautiful spot is a “great place for a romantic weekend away”.
8. Beckford Arms British, Modern restaurant in Fonthill Gifford
“A favourite out-of-town spot” – this spruced-up Georgian coaching inn “right next to beautiful Fonthill Park” offers “a good choice of well-prepared food”, although, with its “beautiful dining room”, it’s really “more a restaurant than a pub”. From the same boutique stable as the Lord Poulett Arms and Talbot Inn in Somerset.
9. The Forester Inn British, Modern restaurant in Donhead St Andrew Lower Street - SP7
A thatched fifteenth century pub with “lovely landlords”, a “great ambience” and ambitious (for these parts) grub, sourced everywhere from a local rare-breed cattle farm to Rungis market in Paris.
10. Pythouse Kitchen Garden British, Modern restaurant in Tisbury West Hatch - SP3
The “gorgeous” walled garden of a south Wiltshire estate provides a year-round setting for meals based around “vegetables and herbs from their plot” and “locally sourced meats” – “BBQ’d over a brazier in summer months”. There’s a “great atmosphere but slightly amateurish service and food – but it works”. Glamping and pick-your-own fruit and veg are also on-site.
