“A great find in York with superb food paired expertly with wines for a great dining experience” – this Grade II-listed seventeenth-century building in York’s historic centre took two years to renovate when it was opened eight years ago. Chef Tom Heywood provides a four-course and eight-course menu and his cooking is highly rated by reporters. One quibble though – “service is knowledgeable but can be terribly slow”.

Top Tip: “the lunch deal is spectacular value at £15 for three small plates – go with a friend and taste all six!”
