Clarrie O’Callaghan's Micklegate venture remains “a great find” by most accounts. Chef Tom Heywood (ex-the admired Pheasant Inn in Harome) is “brilliant at presenting new and incredibly flavourful twists on old classics”, and there’s an “utterly gorgeous” wine list “with a focus on biodynamic and organic wines”.

Clarrie O’Callaghan’s “under-the-radar” venue in a “lovely historic space” on Micklegate is a showcase for Tom Heywood’s “inventive, brilliantly executed cooking” – some reporters even feel it “outshines the more vaunted Skoosh a couple of doors down” (although that’s a minority view). “My most memorable meal of the year – perhaps because it was a surprise and understated”. Top Tip: “the lunch deal is spectacular value at £15 for three small plates – go with a friend and taste all six!”

“The food is lovely” at Clarrie O’Callaghan’s diminutive, “bistro-style” three-year-old in a grade II-listed former bookshop on Micklegate, although one or two diners feel “the setting lets it down a bit”“it’s like a cafe serving top-class meals”. Top Tip: “their lunch including wine and coffee for £20 is one of the best offers in town”.

For 31 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Post COVID six course tasting menu is the standard. Interesting flavour mixes giving its next door neighbour, Skosh, some challenge."
