“Tucked away off the main street and without a sign outside, it may be difficult to find but it’s well worth seeking out” this trendy decade-old haunt from the owners of the Stone Trough Inn in Kirkham Abbey. The venue “specialises in beef, especially ex-dairy cows”, be it Finnish Sashi beef, or Galicia’s famous blonde cattle; add in a “buzzy atmosphere” and “attentive” service, and it “makes for a meat-eater’s heaven”.

“Hidden away on one of York’s least-photogenic streets” (their words), and spread across “several cosy rooms”, this decade-old establishment revolves around “very tasty steaks” featuring flavoursome and ethical beef from ex-dairy cows sourced in England, Galicia and France. The owners also run The Stone Trough Inn in Kirkham Abbey.

This “owner-operated pub that’s now basically a restaurant” is noted for its “great steaks”, with cuts sourced from ex-dairy cows in England, Finland and Galicia in Spain that are put out to pasture for two years after retiring – providing ethical beef with a fuller, more developed flavour. “Fantastic wines” complete the deal.

This exposed-brick steak and ale house – they have a 14s-and-over-only policy, so leave the kids at home – turns out a “good value and interesting menu” where Yorkshire meat is the star. Top Tip – ‘Let’s Get Roasted’ Sunday lunches, running until stocks dwindle, around 4pm.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
