Breaking news

November 2, 2022: "It is with great sadness and a heavy heart we have decided to close the Star Inn the Harbour" -- as reported by Propel Hospitality, the last day of trading will be November 12 2022.

Harden's says

Andrew Pern (of The Star Inn at Harome) fulfils his wish of having a restaurant in his hometown Whitby. The harbour-side venture features Catch-of-the-Day fish specials and game from the North Yorkshire Moors.

“I love this place!”“it used to be the tourist information centre until local lad Andrew Pern tastefully converted the harbourside building into a destination restaurant”, which “manages to walk the line between modern and traditional” with “wonderful food” including a “generous seafood platter”. Pern made his name at The Star at Harome, the famous thatched pub which burnt to the ground in 2021 and rose from the ashes late last year. Amidst solidly good ratings this year, though, there is one recurrent gripe – it’s pricey. BREAKING NEWS: In early November 2022 it was announced that the establishment is to close as of November 12 2022.

The converted former tourist information centre on the harbourside makes a “great location with tasteful internal decor” for well-known chef Andrew Pern’s hometown project, where some feedback includes accounts of “a great meal”. A substantial proportion of reporters, though, are “underwhelmed”, seeing it as “an overpriced Whitby offshoot of the Michelin-starred pub in North Yorkshire. The food was really average and expensive for what it was – style over substance!”

North Yorks star-chef, Andew Pern’s hometown venture is a conversion of the old tourist information centre, on the harbour. Most reporters do praise the “delightful” fresh fish, and “really enjoy the setting”, but one or two sceptics feel that, despite foodie hype, “mediocrity reigns”, and it inspires relatively limited feedback for a business from a ‘big name’.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
