Having taken over in 2016, owners Rob (chef) & Gill Thompson – who previously helmed The Swan at Ampleforth – oversee some “very tasty, locally sourced fare” at this whitewashed inn, which started life in 1620 as a granary. While the menu is not large, the portions are!

“One of James Martin’s favourite gastropubs (or his mum’s anyway)” – this whitewashed seventeenth-century ale house in a North Yorkshire village serves “uncomplicated and delicious meals” from a “sensibly priced and fairly conventional country menu”. Formerly the Wombwell Arms, it was taken over three years ago by Robert & Gill Thompson of the White Swan at Ampleforth.

An “utterly delightful” North York Moors pub – now with three rooms – taken over by Robert & Gillian Thompson of the White Swan in Ampleforth two years back, and FKA The Wombwell Arms; “the menu is humble” but “very good, and also good value by local standards”.

For 31 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
