“Somewhere to look forward to visiting every summer” – a café in a wooden shed in a “stunning beachside setting – but take your coat if it’s at all chilly as there are only outdoor tables!”. The food ranges from soups and dhals in the shoulder season to grilled seafood and salad in summer, all of which is “tasty, homemade and seasonal” and “never disappoints”. Their website also advertises occasional summer feast nights: ‘bring your own plate’ affairs where you dine at trestle tables on the sand.

“What a lovely spot!” – this cabin above secluded Porthcurnick Beach on the remote Roseland peninsula serves simple breakfasts, lunches and occasional evening ‘feasts’, when long trestle tables are set up on the beach at low tide. “Please don’t change” is the message from fans – and take heart: “it’s not as long a walk to get there as you might expect!”.

This “fabulous gem of a place” operates out of a shed reached via a footpath on the Roseland Peninsula, and offers an “amazing amount of yum” in the form of no-booking takeaway picnic lunches or ticketed evening feasts on selected summer evenings – the “long queues offset by the exceptional ambience of a beach to eat on”. “You can’t fault it – maybe the clientele of holidaying Londoners, desperate to Instagram that they’ve made it here, makes it less than great… but I can hardly complain when I’m one of them!”.

For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
