“One of the best gastropubs on the Wirral” – this substantial Victorian property was once a country club, and retains an atmosphere of something beyond a pub, with its immaculate lawns and flower borders. It is part of the Brunning & Price stable, and “while its service may not match up to the quality of the others in the area, that may be because it’s the busiest”.

A link in the ever-expanding Brunning & Price chain embodying their eye for gorgeous properties – like this former country club overlooking landscaped lawns – offering solid grub and quaffable booze (they’ve won CAMRA and GPG awards for their cider and whisky respectively). This year it attracted plaudits for its “good value afternoon tea”, and approachable style with kids (and there’s also an appealing beer garden).

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
