“Looking out the window onto the boats that brought in the spoils of the sea that have been expertly cooked and placed in front of you, it really doesn’t get better or fresher” – so say fans of Michael & Laurence Smith’s “seafood haven”: an 18-seat converted front room in a row of cottages at the north end of Skye. The Skye Fruits de Mer is the main event (it will cost £160 per person from March 2025) and no report rates it less than “outstanding”. The AA’s Scottish Restaurant of the Year 2024/25: “it’s a long way to travel, but worth it… and then some”.

“A tiny converted front room in a row of waterside cottages” hosts Michael & Laurence Smith’s “wonderful” destination – a nowadays much-accoladed 18-seater in an old fishing village at the north end of the Isle of Skye. Seafood is the speciality and there’s only one option for a meal here – the ‘Skye Fruits de Mer’ menu at £140 per person.

“Some of the freshest and finest seafood ever eaten” – Michael & Laurence Smith’s “intimate” 16-seater in an eighteenth-century fishing village on the northern end of the island is renowned for the beautifully cooked and presented local fish and shellfish on its six-course ‘Skye Fruits de Mer’ set menu.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
