Reopened a decade back by the current owner, and a favourite with the CAMRA crew, this “way-above-average gastropub” dates from the 15th century and sits on a meandering street joining the town centre and riverside. “The pies are a particular feature of the menu”, which also includes “good locally caught fish” and “the best-value gourmet Korean spice chicken wings”. Top Tip – “get there by 17.45 if you want to eat…or wait until 19.30 when the first diners will be leaving!” (there are, alas, no reservations).

A “lovely old pub” with rooms in the Citadel, whose fifteenth-century charms (beams, etc.) have been restored to their full glory; the “buzzy” atmosphere and “good-value” local food (e.g. Romney Marsh lamb) create, for one reporter, “the best gastropub I’ve been to this year (and I’ve been to many!)” – an opinion backed by CAMRA, who have voted it the ‘Best Pub in SE England’ for two consecutive years. NB: “the lack of booking is both annoying and an advantage” (“be there by 17.45… or wait ‘til about 19.30!”).

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
