Harden's says

Nathan Outlaw left the pub in January 2019, and it's now been taken over by Paul and Emma Ainsworth of No.6 in Padstow, across the estuary), still in partnership with Cornish brewers Sharp’s.

“With great views overlooking the estuary towards Padstow, this extremely busy pub (run by local superstar chef Paul Ainsworth) serves up some old-school classics – such as Scotch eggs and shepherd’s pie – along with oysters and fresh fish.” By all accounts it’s a “great place to go for lunch”, and “perfect for the family and the dog” – ideally after a walk on the beach. Top Tip – “you must try the rotating beer specials on draught!”

With its “fab atmosphere, gorgeous views” and “excellent food”, top Cornwall-based chef Paul Ainsworth’s pub overlooking the Camel estuary (and with an outside terrace) is “a beautiful place for lunch looking over the water”. The only gripe this year? – “the menu doesn’t change” as often as one or two reporters would like, but this doesn’t stop them from awarding top marks for the cooking. Top Menu Tip – “the best shepherd’s pie ever!”

“Paul Ainsworth’s pub in Rock”“a pleasant ride across on the ferry from Padstow and then a short stroll”“goes from strength to strength”. One of the more commented-on venues locally, it achieves “that perfect combination of offering classic British pub grub, without the huge portions or the stodge”. It has an enticing terrace, and “the views over the Camel estuary are glorious on a fine day”. It’s part of a seven-strong ‘family’ of local venues from the chef, who settled in the area almost 20 years ago.

“Fantastic pub grub in great surroundings” is the crowd-pleasing combination at local champion Paul Ainsworth’s venue with views across the Camel estuary. Classic dishes are given a tasty contemporary makeover, so the Cornish shepherd’s pie contains slow-cooked lamb shoulder and seaweed ragu with mint salsa verde, while the prawn sandwich comes with sherry-cured tomato.

For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
