Right opposite Wilton House, country seat of the earls of Pembroke for four centuries, and originally used as overflow accommodation for guests, this 18th-century inn is now part of the Chickpea Group, who run a mini-empire of pubs and pizza shops. On the menu, “absolutely delicious gastropub grub” which “caters for all tastes but the pies are the best ever” (hearty affairs served with mash, gravy and mushy peas, which have been overseen by head chef Gino for the past 20 years). In winter there’s a heated tent, and in summer the outdoor ‘Garden Kitchen and Tap Room’ on weekends; the old barn and saddle room have now made way for pizza eatery Nole, which also has its own dedicated shop (‘Nole on the Square’) in Salisbury.
