James Sommerin runs his Beach Cliff venue with the help of his wife, Louise, and it’s a swish contemporary operation, with views internally through the long hatch into the kitchen and externally of the sea and pier. The chef is “an artist” and his “superb modern British cuisine” establishes “what a very seriously good restaurant this is”. Even so, ratings slid a little this year amidst gripes about toppish prices and a few reports of service that was “not special”.

“James Sommerin lets the ingredients do the talking with clever twists, and the seasonality of sourcing is evident in his choice of dishes”, say the many fans of his Beach Cliff HQ “overlooking the sea and pier”, applauding his “exceptional” and “inventive” cuisine. Ratings came off the boil slightly this year, however, due to one or two “disappointing” meals.

“The position of the restaurant is superb” – a Beach Cliff Edwardian building along from the pier, whose large windows provide views over the Penarth esplanade to the sea. “Excellent quality ingredients are elevated to another level thanks to the talent of chef James Sommerin” and his “friendly” family-led team.
