John McNutty & David Lapsley’s understated venture is named after the loch where it started life – and its cuisine, celebrating the Scottish lochs and land, “never disappoints” by absolutely all accounts. The “wonderful” tasting menu (the only option) and presentation “worthy of pictures” elicit real raves – indeed, for one reporter, it was “the best meal I have ever had!” Top Tip – “if you book on the whisky and wine pairing evenings, you are in for a treat”.

“Everything here blew me away” – John McNutty & David Lapsley’s relaxed venue provides “an excellent tasting menu showcasing ingredients from Argyll’s ‘Land and Sea’” and inspires a hymn of praise in reports: it “was not the main restaurant we booked on our trip but is the main reason we will return: absolutely loved it and definitely worth a detour!”

“Consistently creative, always innovative” and offering “a wonderful experience on every occasion” – John McNulty & David Lapsley's relaxed Scottish venture (where you pick from ‘Land & Sea’ or veggie-friendly ‘Land’-only tasting menus, £65). Converts are “amazed this restaurant hasn’t had more top awards, given that the team is so focused, passionate and dedicated to delivering a fabulous guest experience”.

“A fabulous find in Oban” – John McNulty and David Lapsley’s venture moved from its former location (of this name) a couple of years ago, and is praised for its very accomplished Scottish cuisine using the best local produce (choose either a ‘land’ or ‘sea’ six-course tasting menu for £45) and a “small but thoughtful wine list” (plus the option of matching wine flights) – “highly recommended!”

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
