“Drop in for a pint or a full-on Sunday roast” – this well-located traditional pub (between Knutsford and Alderley Edge) is “just a pleasant place to be with its fires in winter and good local chat (even though more out of towners come now)”. The food’s not aiming for fireworks but good of its type: “lovely, freshly cooked steak ’n’ kidney pudding” is a favourite on the well-realised menu of pub grub. (And in June 2025, it was crowned both the Best Pub in Cheshire, and the Best Pub in Northwest at the Pub and Bar Magazine’s National Awards 2025).

“When the sun is shining and you want to sit outside (big grassed area) for a typical pub lunch, this is our choice” – this traditional pub between chichi Knutford and Alderley Edge is “still going strong, with decent local beers, a massive selection of spirits and food that’s consistently decent. Get there early before all the out-of-towners arrive!!”

For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
