With its “dark” decor, there’s an “NYC-diner feel” to Marcus Wareing’s quirky, Theatreland venue, whose “lively and buzzy” (if sometimes “noisy”) style and “friendly and welcoming” staff helped improve its ratings this year. For somewhere in the beating heart of the touristy West End, there’s a dizzying range of culinary options created by Kiwi chef Chantelle Nicholson (an offbeat mix of ambitious tasting menus and more down-to-earth dishes, like steaks or roasts); and although there are disappointments, a majority this year do extol its “fantastic culinary creations”.

Marcus Wareing’s multi-level Theatreland diner doesn’t sit within any easily defined niche and continues to split opinions. At its best, this is a versatile, “buzzy and fun” destination (“especially if you can grab a booth”), suited to many occasions; and fans of its “interesting, varied menu, with amazing flavours” just “can’t wait to go back”. Sceptics, though, feel the food is “less inspired than expected from a Marcus Wareing venue”, with “a total bill that’s too much for an ultimately unsatisfying experience”. Top Tip – often nominated as a kid-friendly choice.

Views divide sharply on Marcus Wareing’s Theatreland diner, which has yet to fully find its mojo. It does have a growing profile, and fans for whom its “clever-but-not-too-clever (fairly robust and rich) cooking” makes for “a very enjoyable night out”. Even those who like its “nice buzzy feel” can feel the food is only “decent enough”, however, especially as it ain’t cheap, and there are still too many reports of some plain “dismal” meals.
