“Made over several times, now in good hands with a restaurant-level menu executed well” – this smart Victorian tavern on the Bayswater/Notting Hill borders is part of the Cubitt House group, who sunk a packet into its renovation a couple of years ago. With its raw bar, oysters, seasonal salads and grills, it’s the perfect pub for folks who aren’t that mad about pubs.

“A very solid offering in a great space” – this restored late-Victorian tavern in Notting Hill provides “delicious food from Ben Tish”, culinary director of the smart Cubitt House group. This extends from breakfast via a £15 ‘worker’s lunch’ to more sophisticated evening dining.

It briefly traded as The Commander and then Pomona’s (both RIP), but this attractive Notting Hill tavern (nowadays part of the upscale Cubitt House group) returned in February 2022 to being essentially the same pub it had been since the late 1800s. Despite punchy prices, reports are upbeat on its posh-for-a-pub menu, which includes a selection of oysters and dishes from the ‘Raw Bar’.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
