Summary
TV star chef Monica Galetti often “hits the heights” at the Fitzrovia basement she runs with her husband David – an “unfailingly delightful” place, sometimes tipped for “romance”, but mostly nominated by its large fanclub for its “exquisite cooking” (“superbly prepared fish” in particular) and “pampering” service. But ratings here are limited by a few more nuanced experiences: “I kept hoping some culinary magic would happen, but it never quite made it”.
Summary
“Service from David, Monica and the team is always excellent”, say fans of their Fitzrovia basement where “everyone seems keen to make your visit a very memorable experience”. TV star Monica’s “top-quality cuisine strikes a great balance between classic and innovative” (“refined and packed with flavour but paradoxically, robust at the same time without being unsubtle”) and “the wine list is extremely well-curated and has a wide ambit, as you might expect from David as a former Gavroche Sommelier”. As with many top London restaurants this year, though, ratings dipped a fraction – the pressures of the times? – with more reports along the lines of “a very pleasant experience but slightly underwhelming”. But while the proportion of reporters saying they had their best meal of the year here has declined, more and more have taken it to their hearts as their “favourite” nomination.
Summary
“Monica and David have nailed it here” – their Fitzrovia basement “ticks every box for a truly special night out in London”, starting with “the personal greeting in the beautiful, ground level bar area” before descending into the “lovely”, “bright” yet “romantic” dining room. Monica’s cuisine is “a dream” with “hints of the exotic that subtly differentiate the menu”; and is further bolstered by some “superb and unusual wine pairings”, not to mention “fantastic service”. As ever, “it seems inexplicable that it hasn’t been awarded a Michelin star, as it is way above the quality of many others that have been”.
For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

Mere Restaurant Diner Reviews
"First time at Monica Galletti's restaurant and the food was excellent. We had the tasting menu which had six very good courses; however, compared to similar menus at Michelin star restaurants there were no additional 'amuse-bouche' or extra courses. This could become Michelin starred but they just need to improve a little if they want it."
"Always good - they look after you - very disappointed they are closing "
"Excellent food, particularly fish, though the flavour combinations can be a bit off-key. Nicely designed basement setting, can be noisy. Attentive service."
