This “outstanding family Japanese” in Putney has attracted a strong following across southwest London for its fresh and authentic cooking, presented in deceptively – but authentically Japanese – modest surroundings.

This “very popular” Japanese nook in Putney wins strong local support for its authentic sushi and other classics – with cooking, produce and service of a standard that belies its (authentically) downbeat appearance.

An “extremely busy” little corner of Tokyo transported to Putney – “so book ahead” – this owner-operated café comes “damn close to the full 5 stars for food – we had the toro maki, okonomiyaki and plaice karaage, all somewhere between very good and excellent”.

“Teeming with Japanese customers and Putney locals in the know”, this “great little sushi bar”, presided over by its “eagle-eyed chef/owner” (“sit up at the sushi bar to see the main man calmly in action”) is “just like being in Tokyo”. Results are “fabulous”: there are “not many places in London where the fish on the sushi is actually thicker than the rice!”. Another indie Japanese, Cho-San (RIP) was on the same site, and the “rather tired” interior either “works against it” or adds authenticity, depending on your viewpoint.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
