Ambitious young chef Shane Marshall conjures up a short menu of “exquisite” modern sharing plates at his minimalist three-year-old venue in Battersea. Each dish is refined down to a maximum of four ‘movements’ to be made for service from the open kitchen – although the preparation of individual elements may already have taken several hours.

Shane Marshall’s highly accomplished, if spartan Battersea venture (formerly called Darwin) serves “a very small menu of exquisite modern British food” that’s well above-par for its anonymous location. “You wouldn’t know it was there unless someone told you.”

“What’s not to love” about this new Battersea favourite, which inspires major love from local reporters for its “fine dining done informally and brought to the local high street”. The only quibble is that its interior is “a bit Spartan”, but it provides “superb top-end cooking” (“deconstructed classics, with some genuine taste sensations”) from the open kitchen.

For 31 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Buzzing local casual fine dining, eat at the counter if you can for a great insight into how to inject maximum flavours into a dish. Everything tastes good, and portions are hearty "
