Between Clapham Junction and Wandsworth Town, this grey-walled fixture (also with counter dining) puts the focus on the cooking from Shane Marshall’s open kitchen. Choose from an à la carte menu of modern bistro fare, with a roast on Sunday – its small fan club from the SW postcodes rate it very highly.

This “buzzing local” brings “casual fine dining” to Battersea, with highly focused young chef Shane Marshall and his team striving to create an ‘uncluttered’ dining experience. That may sound like hard work, but “everything tastes good and portions are hearty”. “Eat at the counter if you can for a great insight into how to inject maximum flavours into a dish”.

Ambitious young chef Shane Marshall conjures up a short menu of “exquisite” modern sharing plates at his minimalist three-year-old venue in Battersea. Each dish is refined down to a maximum of four ‘movements’ to be made for service from the open kitchen – although the preparation of individual elements may already have taken several hours.

Shane Marshall’s highly accomplished, if spartan Battersea venture (formerly called Darwin) serves “a very small menu of exquisite modern British food” that’s well above-par for its anonymous location. “You wouldn’t know it was there unless someone told you.”

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
