“Out-of-the-way Gallic treasure” that’s worth the detour to Lavender Hill (near Clapham Junction), for Damien Fremont’s traditional French cuisine ‘with a modern touch’. It attracts the highest ratings and fulsome praise this year, especially for the “sublime” five-course tasting menu. Fremont and his co-founder, fellow Frenchman Christopher Nespoux, who runs the front of house, first met working at the Ritz Club 10 years ago.
“Brilliantly done!” Damien Fremont’s contemporary take on classic French cuisine has built a small but enthusiastic following for the venue he founded on Lavender Hill with Christopher Nespoux. But while fans say its “five-course ‘surprise’ tasting menu is a sublime lesson in elegant simplicity”, the odd reporter has the opposite reservation: “too chefy looking – everything looks pretty, with smears and flower sprinkles, but it detracts from the food”.
“A surprising and welcome find in Lavender Hill” – Damien Fremont and Christopher Nespoux’s “homely” yet “truly exceptional” French three-year-old provides an “enthusiastic” welcome, and “adds a real level of quality” to the local eating destinations. “If you can, go for the tasting menu for some really sublime dishes, and there are some brilliant accompanying wines”.
