“Brilliantly done!” Damien Fremont’s contemporary take on classic French cuisine has built a small but enthusiastic following for the venue he founded on Lavender Hill with Christopher Nespoux. But while fans say its “five-course ‘surprise’ tasting menu is a sublime lesson in elegant simplicity”, the odd reporter has the opposite reservation: “too chefy looking – everything looks pretty, with smears and flower sprinkles, but it detracts from the food”.

"The service was first class and the cooking matched it. Take time and try the tasting menu and the accompanying wines. The beef dish was flavoursome mixing beautifully cooked hanger steak coupled with unctuous slow cooked cheeks. The hay froth on the chestnut and pumpkin raviole was delicious. The cheese course surprised and the pear desert was a fantastic combination with the salted caramel setting off the pear brilliantly. The Sancerre and the Sauternes are both top notch as is the champagne offered as an appetiser"
