“Praise be to the gods of southeast London for the resurrection of Silk Road” following a six-month closure that had its legion of fans worried last winter. And “Christ the food is still great” – spicy Uigur fare from Xinjiang in northwest China, full of “lip-burning/numbing brilliance”. (One regular, though, feels the “refurb is a bit mad – it’s gone from ‘crap canteen’ to ‘airport lounge in random Mediterranean resort!”)

This “rapid-fire” canteen in Camberwell serves up “pungent and fiery spiced dishes” from Xinjiang in northwest China, homeland of the Muslim Uigurs. The food is “relatively cheap” and “a cut above” what you might expect – which makes a visit “well worth sharing a table and being hurried out afterwards”.

“Basic room, basic service… but man, the food is good!!” – and “incredible value” – at this Camberwell canteen, which is renowned as one of the capital’s better cheap eats. It knocks out “fiery but tasty” dishes from Xinjiang in China’s northwest, home of the Muslim Uighurs.

The “fabulous, flavour-packed, spicy ‘Chinese’ food from China’s Muslim northwest” (Xinjiang, home of the Uighurs) “never fails to hit the spot” at this “canteen-style” pit-stop in Camberwell. It’s an absolute “byword for value”, too (“and now accepts card payment”).

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
