“As non-vegans this was a revelation!” This “grown-up vegan restaurant” – a spin-off from the well-established Mildreds Group – has an excellent view of Borough Market and has won a strong reputation in its two years of operation. There’s “no sense of a second-rate eating experience for lack of meat / fish etc” and its “inventive” cooking provides “really interesting flavours and combinations”. On the downside, “the menu doesn’t change that often”; and ratings weakened this year due to a few disappointed reporters who found it “overrated” due to lacklustre dishes and “intermittent” service. In June 2023, after our annual diners’ poll had concluded, a new branch opened in Canary Wharf.

“A fantastic new addition from the Mildreds group” – this autumn 2021 newcomer makes “a good place to take people who are sceptical about meat-free food”. It’s “a pretty location with an excellent view of Borough Market” that’s “full of atmosphere” and “it doesn’t overly virtue-sell the plant-based experience: they just get on with making it excellent” with a “slightly more innovative approach to the seasonally changing menu” than in the main chain. “The wine list is limited, but they do have cocktails”.

Summary

Opposite Southwark Cathedral, this autumn 2021 opening from the Mildreds team looks set to be a new flagship for that meat-free group, gearing up on its proximity to Borough Market ‘bringing to life the history of the market and the produce that it sells’. The restaurant will open from early morning with a plant-based breakfast, operating all day and with a list of vegan wines, beers and handcrafted cocktails.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
