Harden's says
In the shadow of Southwark Cathedral, a plant-based restaurant with a pedigree - it's from the team behind Mildred's. International cuisines and local, sustainable ingredients will make up the dishes.
Harden's survey result
Summary
“Very tasty, entirely plant-based food” is an all-out winner at this pair of spinoffs from the long-established Mildreds group – in Borough Market and “in the heart of Canary Wharf” (the latter being “a real find amid all the steak joints”). As well as satisfying their core veggie audience, “there’s plenty on the menu to keep carnivores happy”, with much praise in our annual diners’ poll for “vegan cooking so good that you wonder why you’re not (yet) a vegan!”. One warning: “some of the spicing is very hot and not well indicated on the menu”. Top Tip – “the tasting celebration menus are not only good value, they do away with the need for making choices among so many enticing options”.
Summary
“As non-vegans this was a revelation!” This “grown-up vegan restaurant” – a spin-off from the well-established Mildreds Group – has an excellent view of Borough Market and has won a strong reputation in its two years of operation. There’s “no sense of a second-rate eating experience for lack of meat / fish etc” and its “inventive” cooking provides “really interesting flavours and combinations”. On the downside, “the menu doesn’t change that often”; and ratings weakened this year due to a few disappointed reporters who found it “overrated” due to lacklustre dishes and “intermittent” service. In June 2023, after our annual diners’ poll had concluded, a new branch opened in Canary Wharf.
Summary
“A fantastic new addition from the Mildreds group” – this autumn 2021 newcomer makes “a good place to take people who are sceptical about meat-free food”. It’s “a pretty location with an excellent view of Borough Market” that’s “full of atmosphere” and “it doesn’t overly virtue-sell the plant-based experience: they just get on with making it excellent” with a “slightly more innovative approach to the seasonally changing menu” than in the main chain. “The wine list is limited, but they do have cocktails”.
For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
