Out goes the Polish vodka and in comes the jerk chicken, oxtail curry and flying fish at this Waterloo site. For over a decade, this intriguing former Georgian factory (a coachbuilding works) traded as Baltic (RIP). But it’s now in the hands of Michael Hanbury who is aiming to highlight an evolved form of Jamaican cuisine. A rum library and cocktails too – Whispering Death anyone?

“The lovely space that was Baltic (RIP)” – a former Georgian coachbuilding works south of Blackfriars Bridge – nowadays hosts chef-patron Michael Hanbury’s yearling, which is billed as the capital’s ‘first pan-Caribbean restaurant’. The service has sometimes seemed “slightly confused”, but the “original and very flavourful” food receives steady praise.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
