Owner's description
JM Oriental is the proud recipient of a coveted Golden Chopsticks Award for ‘Best Fusion Restaurant’. Expect a fine dining experience with founder and executive chef, Andrew Hung. Andrew soon realised his path in life was to follow his father’s footsteps into hospitality instead of architectural engineering. Following a string of successful West End ventures, Andrew brings a wealth of experience to JM Oriental, where he is proud to present an innovative approach to oriental dishes outside of central London.
The impressive 40 seat restaurant in Colindale is only 25 minutes from Tottenham Court Road. On entering JM Oriental, you immediately take in the elegant interior, which is showcased by stunning, subdued lighting, allowing a vibrant ambience to prevail. There is also a semi-private dining area suitable for 10 guests.
The inventive, modern menu places an emphasis on fine dining with a focus on dim sum from Hong Kong alongside influences from other regional Chinese dishes. A dim sum chef presents his craftsmanship through an extensive menu, where each dumpling is delicately rolled, filled and folded, and which features Truffle, pork and prawn ‘sui-mei’. You can also treat yourself to an Egg custard lava bao from the steamed section as well as a Beef steak puff with black pepper or Mooli croissant.
The à la carte menu has plenty of signature dishes with beautiful presentation and high-end ingredients, as well as featuring classic dishes with an inventive twist such as the JM signature Peking duck; whole duck, crispy beancurd and a touch of edible gold flake.
Menu Highlights include:
Starters
Crispy king prawns, Thai orange mayo, pomegranate
Slow-coooked smokey baby ribs, fruity barbecued sauce
Calamari, peppercorn, shichimi salt, Japanese seaweed
Main courses
Steamed Chilean sea bass, yellow bean garlic, soya, pine nuts
Braised lobster tail, morel mushroom and fresh truffle
UK grass-fed rib eye cube, asparagus, XO sauce
Duke of Berkshire pork karaage, ponzu, pineapple glaze.
‘Kamemeshi’ Fried rice hot pot with seafood and duck meat grave
Often overlooked in East and South-east Asian restaurants, the desserts take the form of a JM signature chocolate fondant with Japanese matcha lava or Pandan mascarpone cake, mango jelly, raspberry sauce.
Also served are a selection of carefully crafted cocktails which range from a Macau Love story with Lychee Puree Vodka and Prosecco or a Japanese Assassin, which is comprised of muddled ginger, Midori melon, liqueur, tequila, lime juice and egg white.
The wine list features house wines to cellar selections including an impressive range of French wines from Puligny Montrachet to Château Lafite Rothschild.

Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
