“It’s probably unfair to call it pub food though it is food in a pub!” – Re-opened in 2022, this revamped Islington boozer has built a major following thanks to offering “an all-round five-star experience” that’s very superior for the gastropub genre. Staff who are “charming, friendly and fast” provide “simple”-sounding yet “fabulous” and “sustainably sourced” dishes (“the almond financier made me smile so much the chef came over to see what was entertaining me”). “The only downside is the slightly out-of-the-way location” that’s “hard to get to on public transport”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Brilliant Sunday dinner served by a young and enthusiastic team. Loved the simple decor and the fact they haven't tried to cram too many tables in"

"Had high expectations but these weren’t met. Some flavours were just odd. Meat was sinewy. Lunch service was more successful than dinner. "
