“Lovely Austrian spot in the middle of Islington” – a fixture of cute Camden Passage for more than a decade – that’s perfect “when you fancy something a bit different”: “think good coffee and amazing cakes by day and gorgeous goulash and schnitzel by night”. “Interesting Austrian wine list, too”.

“Classic Austrian comfort food” is the order of the day at this Austrian-run all-day café, which opened in the City 20 years ago and moved to Islington’s Camden Passage in 2011. The menu runs from “great coffee and cakes”, via “delicious and decadent brunch” to “a choice of traditional main dishes, with very good veal in cream sauce or schnitzel and nice desserts”. Commendably, there is little pandering to local tastes: everything is as close as possible to what you might eat in Vienna.

This “impressive Austrian café” in Islington’s “atmospheric Camden Passage” has established itself as a “lovely local gem” over almost 20 years. It serves “traditional Austrian classics” – from “delicious and very reasonable soup” and schnitzel to Sachertorte, Linzertorte and cheesecake, along with “excellent coffee”. Kipferl means croissant – the French pastry reputedly invented in Vienna.

A slice of Vienna in Camden Passage that’s “more than a coffee shop” (with “terrific brews and cakes”) but also “a lovely casual lunch or dinner spot” with “great” Austrian specialities including “perfect schnitzel”. A Ladbroke Grove offshoot closed down in early 2019.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Not a place for dieters, a lovely place to stop for cake and coffee or for a meal. The layered torte are worth the calories."
