December 2017: James Cochran's N1 follow-up to his EC3 debut closes within four months of its launch. The restaurant's website says the Islington 'residency' has now come to an end and to look out for the next collaboration. The PR fanfare didn't make mention of this venture being temporary. Hmmm...
Former Ledbury chef James Cochran follows up his City debut (James Cochran EC3) with a site at Islington shopping arcade Angel Central. The space (once Ed's Diner) will combine a restaurant, wine bar and cocktail bar, serving locally-sourced British produce alongside the chef's renowned jerk chicken.
Harden's survey result
For 25 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. This year diners have submitted over 60,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK.
“Superb cooking is in evidence” at ex-Ledbury chef, James Cochran’s newcomer, a couple of minutes from Liverpool Street, where his British small plates are “the stuff of dreams” and “at prices seldom seen for food of this quality in the City”. There are negatives – too often “it is let down by very amateur service”, and “the decor is not terribly inspiring”, but all-in-all it’s still highly recommended. In July 2017, he announced a second 60-seater at Angel Central.
