Harden's survey result
Bethnal Green’s old town hall – nowadays a boutique hotel – houses this 30-seater overseen by chef, Simon Shand. Although it lacks the profile it once did, the limited feedback we received this year was all positive: in particular “the fixed price, five-course menu is excellent value for good, modern British cuisine”.
“Hidden away at the back of the hotel”, this “tiny”, “sparse” chamber shares a kitchen with the better-known Typing Room; for fans, it’s “a wonderful fashionista inside secret” and a “splendid gastronomic delight”, but for sceptics “the food doesn’t taste quite as good as hoped”.
Located on the first floor of Bethnal Green's Town Hall Hotel, the 30-cover restaurant contains an airy, light-filled dining room alongside a relaxed lounge area, both ideal for casual meals and drinks. Proving that more can be done with less, Chef Craig Johnson (formerly of Newington Table, Pavilion and Elliots) looks to showcase big flavours with British produce.
