“In the heart of Walthamstow Village”, this “great neighbourhood spot” – a Spar supermarket with kitchen attached – wins praise for its “quality” cooking (“the 2019 Harden’s description of pub-type grub underplays its standard and originality”). “Very relaxed and welcoming for young children”, the venture’s best-known innovation is bacon jam, which you can buy by the jar in various flavours. Other branches have opened in Hackney and, most recently, Hammersmith (somewhat better-served areas, so these respective branches are somewhat less of a local lifeline).

The “excellent burgers and pub-type grub” at these ‘Spar-supermarkets-with-kitchen-attached’ in Walthamstow Village and Hackney (and also Bishop’s Stortford) make them favourite local hang outs as well as “super places to go for a meal with the kids” (even if non-parents can sometimes find it “family overfriendly!”). Top Tip: the “renowned chicken burger” (and their famous bacon jam, which can be bought by the jar). In late summer 2018 a new branch opened on the opposite side of town, south of Hammersmith Broadway.

“A lovely spot in Walthamstow Village” – an “enjoyable” British kitchen whose “attentive staff” provide “locally sourced” fare that’s “great value for money”. Bacon jam was invented here, so take a jar home with you and “check out the Spar next door which is run by Eat 17 and specialises in supplies from interesting small producers”.

For 30 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
