Harden's says
Townsend at the Whitechapel Gallery and former Anglo chef Nick Gilkinson opened this all-day bistro, at the top of a four-storey Victorian warehouse in Spitalfields, in early April 2023. The name is "an old English word meaning public or universal, but which also translates to a sense of community".

“A new spin-off from Whitechapel Gallery’s Townsend that’s just opened”: former Anglo chef Nick Gilkinson launched this hard-to-find all-day bistro, at the top of a four-storey Victorian warehouse in Spitalfields, in early April 2023. The choice of an Olde English name – meaning a sense of community, apparently – chimes with its short menu of determinedly seasonal British cuisine and we’ve optimistically rated it on initial reports describing “an awesome new opening, with fantastic, flavoursome food, locally sourced and provided by personable and knowledgeable staff”. It is by all accounts a “lovely dining room too”, with a roof terrace an expected addition.
