“A long-standing favourite that’s always a joy” – Jeremy & Vera Ashpool’s popular venue has a particularly “delightful” atmosphere, thanks to its “elegant” (although sometimes “packed”) interior, and most especially due to its location in gorgeous Borde Hill Garden (200 acres of famous landscaped grounds). Service is “lovely and attentive” and the “imaginative menus are excellently delivered” and at “good value” prices.
“Dining on the terrace is something to look forward to” when the sun is shining at Jeremy and Vera Ashpool’s “charming” and very well-known venture, in the “lovely” heart of Borde Hill Garden (200 acres of famous landscape gardens). “A favourite over many years”, it continues to win consistent praise for its “excellent” cuisine (some of “the best in Sussex”) and “friendly” style.
“Jeremy and his team have certainly not lost their touch”, say fans of his “delightful dining room” – “a longtime favourite” that’s “even better on the sun terrace overlooking the garden when weather permits”. It again inspires one or two accusations of “living on past glories”, but most reports say it’s “excellent in all respects”.
“Eat outside in warm weather, otherwise ask for a window table overlooking the terrace and walled garden”, if you dine at Jeremy Ashpool’s “very romantic”, “friendly and professional” favourite, which is “perfect for a special occasion (and sometimes the occasion is that we’re eating at Jeremy’s!)” Most reports remain of “exquisite” cooking too (although there were a few former fans this year who said it fell short – “hopefully a blip not a trend”).
Jeremy’s at Borde Hill Restaurant Diner Reviews
"Overwhelmingly popular venue, certainly for lunch. Busy with wedding receptions, wakes as well as regular customers. Small wonder the service is variable as the polite and overworked staff attempt to provide a high standard. And the food certainly lives up to that. Good cooking, with a nod to grande cuisine that doesn't quite work: arancini with tomatoes as an amuse bouche doesn't hit the tops, but the courses are flavourful and well cooked. The wine list is different, interesting and not at all expensive."
"Arrived, it’s part of a centre and large assertive signs in the car park to ensure you only park in designated spaces. Nicely greeted but put right next to the door and abutting the bar above me to the right so felt really limited. Staff were helpful, if a little enthused about me having alcohol! Amuse bouche was a nice little taster. Offered a choice of two breads the one I had was a quite heavy alleged sourdough, the butter was apparently home made, it had black speckles on it, I later found out was salt. Starter was monkfish, weirdly in breadcrumbs, texture of the coating was a bit like scampi. Slightly odd to have al denote new potatoes with monkfish. Main was beef with the “trimmings”. The jus had clearly been on the plate too long as it was starting to solidify/dry on the plate. The beef was exactly as I requested, ie rare, but very thin slices of a reasonable quality cut. It was hard to ascertain if it was the jus or the vegetables that had a bit too much salt. The Yorkshire was large and crunchy, with little sort texture. The dessert was a white chocolate Bavarois with bitter chocolate on the top. It had a yellow frozen disk on the top the size of an extra strong mint that was frozen hard and frankly I had no idea of what flavour it was. Had a pleasant enough cucumber and mint tea with petit fours that were out on my table with no explanation of what they were. Staff act in a very “busy” manner, thus there is no feeling of relaxation during the meal. Toilets were clean. Staff need to slow down and not remove plates instantly you put the cutlery down. Equally, I went to the toilet to find my finished main course plate still on the table. Tap water is supplied in bottles but no ice and wasn’t that cool. Was it worth the 120 mile round trip? Sadly not."
