“Family friendly and lively” Sussex pub-with-rooms that was taken over by the national Young’s chain in 2022, after over four decades under the Pullan family. There is the odd grumble about the switch, but most reports remain positive and its “lovely terrace” in particular continues to win approval.

This “lovely, buzzing old pub” in the Sussex Weald has all the ingredients required for a “perfect country inn”: “a lovely old bar”, “great food from an interesting menu”, and “a brilliant garden that’s even more beautiful in the sun”. Piers Morgan grew up on site – but don’t worry, he’s long gone!

A “real, traditional old pub with a smart modern patio and fabulous views over the Sussex Weald” plus “magnificent beer” – no wonder this has “been a good foodie destination for decades”. The Piers Morgan associations (he grew up on-site when his stepdad was landlord) may or may not add to its appeal…

A “sublime setting” – especially in summer when “eating outside has marvelous views” over the Ouse Valley – and “superb food using local produce” are the trump cards at this “charming” eighteenth-century inn. Piers Morgan lived here as a child, when his stepdad was the landlord.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
