Harden's survey result
Tom Kitchin’s second venture opened in 2010 with Dominic Jack as chef-patron and this chic Gallo-Scottish outfit is, say fans, a “joy to be at”, turning out “fantastic food” in a “lovely atmosphere”. There remains, however, a vocal minority of sceptics, for whom it’s “a bit gimmicky”, “not cheap” and occasionally “misconceived” (“had the surprise menu… the surprise was how bad it was!”).
Chef Dominic Jack’s “fantastic food”, combining Scottish produce with French technique, wins high praise from the many fans of his chic establishment near the castle, a sister to Edinburgh’s The Kitchin. Scores would have been higher but for a vociferous minority who reckon it has “lost its way” a bit this year.
This high profile castle-side dining room, run with the involvement of Tom Kitchin, elicited mixed reviews this year. Fans accord it the highest ratings, praising chef/patron Dominic Jack’s “awesome” cuisine, but quite a number of reviewers this year found it “overpriced and underwhelming”.
For 30 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
