“Locally sourced food cooked to perfection” and a “charming welcome” reward visitors to Constable Country who are lured by the distinctive yellow facade of this 15th-century coaching inn, owned and operated for 22 years by Piers Baker. The “great menu”, which takes most of its cues from Italian cuisine, makes this “a place to while away the afternoon” over a long lunch.

“An excellent” stopping-off point in the heart of Constable Country, this centuries-old coaching inn has all the beams and wood panelling you’d hope for – as well as “very tasty meals with nice accompaniments”. There are “lots of tourists”, of course, but it’s a “fun” and “reliable” operation under the same independent ownership for 21 years.

“A real find” – this “beautiful old coach-house pub with rooms”, “bang opposite the church” in gorgeous Constable country, offers a delightful “casual ambience of sofas, log fires, magazines and top service” – backed up by a “short menu that changes frequently” and an “eclectic wine list developed by the owner”.

This old coaching inn serves “great food” in the beamed dining room or elm bar, with open fires adding to the “busy, buzzy atmosphere”. Service can be “a little hectic” when “the pub is full of people having a great time” – but you can borrow a bike or a boat and make your escape along Constable’s peaceful and unspoilt River Stour.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
