St John alumnus George Livesey’s “lovely neighbourhood restaurant” might look modest, but it’s a star of the Bristol dining scene with a Michelin star to match – “unreservedly commended” for the staff (“clearly proud of the food”), to the “no-nonsense atmosphere” and the “brilliant tasting menu at a fair price”: nine courses for £90 per person at dinner, the Anglo-French cooking combining with Scandi influences and some dishes that are “very clearly Japanese-influenced”.

“Simply outstanding cooking, the menu beautifully balanced and the overall presentation stunning” is typical of the accolades heaped on chef-owner George Livesey (ex-St John and Club Gascon), whose former grocer’s shop is now a star of the Bristol gastronomic scene.

“Brilliantly original cooking” from chef-owner George Livesey (ex-St John and Club Gascon) has won huge acclaim for this modest venue in a former grocer’s. He manages to find “flavours, textures and combinations not seen elsewhere but which all work”. (“The one exception was strawberries with scallops … but we can forgive one mistake!”).

Chef-owner George Livesey’s “very adventurous tasting menus” – full of “unusual ingredients and foraged items” – have made this modest-looking, former greengrocers a top star of the Bristol dining scene. Some reporters reckon it’s “a bit of a Marmite restaurant – love it or hate it”, but all are converted by the time they leave, and if some dishes “don’t look appealing on the menu or on the black plates, they certainly taste good”. Service is “friendly and well-informed”, and there’s an “interesting, mainly organic wine list”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"The food was of a high standard but definitely couldn't be classed as exceptional. Service was chaotic and fell well short of the level required for the of a high-end restaurant. After three hours into the tasting menu it started to feel like a hostage situation."
