From the husband and wife team behind Surbiton’s “charming” Gallic all-rounder, The French Table, a new French/Mediterranean bistro arrives in the heart of Wimbledon Village. Eric and Sarah Guignard opened The White Onion on SW19’s High Street today (15 May), taking over the former site of The Lawn Bistro.
Welcome news we’re sure to residents and workers who have been rather underserved when it comes to decent dining destinations.
The pair have run The French Table (much lauded by our reporters as “a real treat”) for the past 14 years, and have now collaborated with investors for their latest venture. Eric will remain at his Surbiton stalwart, overseeing the menu at The White Onion but leaving the cooking up to his protégé of eight years Frédéric Duval.
On the menu: Diver-caught scallops with pork belly, cauliflower purée and green apple gel; honey roast quail with pistachio purée and celeriac rémoulade; Assiette of Herdwick lamb with almond and roquette crust; and Monkfish wrapped in crispy potato with chorizo and broad bean risotto.
The 70-cover restaurant has a 150-bin wine list and there is also a reasonably priced set lunch menu on Fridays & Saturdays (£16.50-19.50) and Sundays (£21.50-25). During the Wimbledon Tennis Championship fortnight (29 June-12 July) it will open for lunch throughout the week.
